During Grierson's raid, this unit was an unattached cavalry command of Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. Ranging through Claiborne, Jefferson, and Adams Counties, the regiment participated in the pursuit of Grierson's cavalry troops. At the battle of Champion Hill, the regiment was attached to Brig. Gen. John S. Bowen's Division, of Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Army of Vicksburg, and during the siege of Vicksburg, was attached to Brig. Gen. George B. Cosby's 1st Brigade, of Brig. Gen. William H. (Red) Jackson's Cavalry Division, Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Relief, Department of the West, and commanded by Col. Wirt Adams.
