This unit was attached to Brig. Gen. John S. Bowen's Grand Gulf, MS, Defense Forces, and commanded by Col. Robert Lowry. At the Battle of Port Gibson, MS, the regiment was attached to Brig. Gen. Martin E. Green's Command, of Brig. Gen. John S. Bowen's Defense Forces, and at Champion Hill it was attached to Brig. Gen. Lloyd Tilghman's (killed in action) and Col. Arthur E. Reynold's 1st Brigade, of Maj. Gen. William Wing Loring's Division, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Army of Vicksburg. During the Siege of Vicksburg, the unit was attached to Col. Arthur E. Reynold's and Brig. Gen. John Adams' (assumed command 8 June 1863) 1st Brigade, of Maj. Gen. William Wing Loring's Division, Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Relief, Department of the West.
