Regimental tablet located on Confederate Avenue north of Fort Garrott. During the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou, the regiment was assigned to Brig. Gen. Edward D. Tracy's Brigade of Maj. Gen'ls. Martin Luther Smith's (until 30 Dec 1862) and Carter L. Steven's 2d Military District in Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and commanded by Col. D. R. Hundley. This unit was attached to Brig. Gen. Edward D. Tracy's (killed in action 1 May 1863) and Col. Isham W. Garrott's (killed in action 17 June 1863) Brigade of Brig. Gen. John S. Bowen's Confederate Forces at the Battle of Port Gibson, MS.

Later the regiment was attached to Brig. Gen. Stephen Dill Lee's, Lt. Col. T. M. Arrington, and Maj. G. W. Mathieson. [Refer to Edwin Bearss' The Vicksburg Campaign, Volume I, page 226; Volume II, pages 406 and 644 and Volume III, pages 778, 872 and 964.] The tablet reads:

"Small work on line of Lee's Brigade"

"This work was held, May 22, 1863, and the assault of the Union force repulsed, by the 31st Alabama, under command of Lt. Col. T.M. Arrington and Maj. G.W. Mathieson, with the 23rd Alabama on its right and the 30th Alabama on its left. Casualties in the regiment on that day cannot be accurately stated. The regiment held the same position until the end of the defense. Casualties during the defense: in 31st Alabama; killed 21, wounded 37; total 58; 23rd Alabama killed 17, wounded 15; total 32."
