From the 15 April to 8 May 1863, this unit was in Brig. Gen. Winfield S. Featherston's 3d Brigade, of Maj. Gen. William Wing Loring's Division, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and commanded by Col. Frank Schaller. Prior to that, the regiment was commanded by Lt. Col. H. G. Ried. At Champion Hill the regiment was attached to Brig. Gen. Winfield S. Featherston's 3d Brigade, of Maj. Gen. William Wing Loring's Division, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Army of Vicksburg. During the siege of Vicksburg, the unit was attached to Brig. Gen. Winfield S. Featherston's 3d Brigade, of Maj. Gen. William Wing Loring's Division, Gen. Joseph E.
