From the 15 April to 8 May 1863, this unit was mounted, stationed at Jackson, MS, and attached to Brig. Gen. Lloyd Tilghman's 1st Brigade, of Maj. Gen. William Wing Loring's Division, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and commanded by Col. Daniel R. Russell. A detachment of 3 companies, under command of Col. H.H. Miller, was assigned to Col. Robert V. Richardson's Task Force Richardson. At Champion Hill, still mounted, the regiment was attached as cavalry to Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Army of Vicksburg, and commanded by Lt. Col. William N. Brown. During the siege of Vicksburg, the regiment (dismounted) was attached to Col. Arthur E. Reynold's and Brig. Gen. John Adams' (assumed command 8 June 1863) 1st Brigade, of Maj. Gen. William Wing Loring's Division, Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Relief, Department of the West.
