This unit was attached to Maj. A.H. Chalmers' 18th Battalion Mississippi Cavalry, of Brig. Gen. James R. Chalmers' 5th Military District (headquartered at Panola, MS), Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Department of the West, and commanded by J. W. Smith. Originally Smith's Mississippi Partisan Rangers, this organization was re-designated as Co.
