North Union Avenue and Grant Circle are closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic for repairs. Entering these construction areas is prohibited. This work is to repair severe weather damage in 2020. The remainder of the park and tour road are open. More
Due to weather related incidents, Vicksburg National Cemetery is closed to vehicular traffic, however it is open to pedestrians. Visitor can park in the adjacent USS Cairo parking lot and walk into the cemetery.
Monument designating the assault of 22 May 1863, is located on the steep slope between Union Avenue and Confederate Avenue on the left of side of Thayer's Approach (Park Tour Stop #6). Also a monument designating a sharpshooters' line located on the south side of Union Avenue approximately 0.8 miles west of Thayer's Approach (Park Tour Stop #6), and a multiple monument located on the south side of Union Avenue approximately 0.2 miles west of the Navy Memorial (Park Tour Stop #7). This unit was attached to Col. Charles R. Woods' 2d Brigade of Maj. Gen. Frederick Steele's and Brig. Gen. John M. Thayer's 1st Division, of Maj. Gen'ls William T. Sherman's and Frederick Steele's XV Army Corps, and commanded by Col. Francis Hassendeubel (killed during the siege), Lt. Col. John F. Cramer, and Maj. Francis Romer.
