This unit was attached to Lt. Col. Christopher C. Wilbourn's command, of Maj. Gen. Franklin Gardner's 3d Military District at Port Hudson, LA, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and commanded by Maj. William H. Garland. This organization was not under siege at Port Hudson and continued to operate militarily. Originally known as Garland's Mississippi Cavalry Battalion, in September 1863, the battalion was designated as the 14th Confederate Cavalry.
