Valley Forge National Historical Park encompasses 3,500 acres of forest, riparian, wetland, meadow, and aquatic habitats. This diversity of habitats provides lots of great opportunities for bird watching. The park serves as a refuge for many bird species, particularly grassland birds. Some of the best places to encounter birds at Valley Forge are on Mount Joy, along Valley Creek and the Schuylkill River, and in meadows throughout the park. The Mid-Atlantic Inventory & Monitoring Network (MIDN) monitors breeding bird populations at Valley Forge. Birds are an excellent indicator of environmental health and ecosystem integrity, and the survey data collected during breeding bird monitoring helps park managers to make informed magagement decisions.
