Reaching the Mississippi Unit

From the North (Memphis, Tennessee) on I-55

Traveling south on I-55 from Memphis, take exit 227 toward Highway 32 W. In Charleston, Mississippi, turn left on Clay Street (MS-35 S/Highway 32). After 1.6 miles, turn right to stay on Highway 32. In Webb, Mississippi, make another right turn onto US Highway 49 E after 16.8 miles before making a right onto Westbrooks Ave. in Sumner, Mississippi. Follow Westbrooks Ave. to S Railroad Ave. and follow until you reach N. Court St. Turn right and follow N. Court St. to the Emmett Till Interpretive Center, which you will reach shortly on your left.

The drive takes approximately 2 hours one way.

From the South (Jackson, Mississippi) on I-55

Traveling north on I-55 from Jackson, take exit 144 for MS-17 N toward Lexington, Mississippi. Turn left onto MS-12 W in Lexington and follow to Tchula, Mississippi, where you’ll continue towards Greenwood, Mississippi. At the junction of US-82 W and US-49 E in Greenwood, turn right to stay on US-49 E. Take US-49 E all the way to Sumner, Mississippi and make a right on S Railroad Ave. Turn right on N Court St., where the Emmett Till Interpretive Center will be on your left.

The drive takes approximately 2 ½ hours one way.

From the East (Birmingham, Alabama) on I-22

Traveling west on I-22 from Birmingham, take exit 76 toward Pontotoc, Mississippi on MS-9 S. Follow to US 278 W, and continue on that route to Marks, Mississippi, where you’ll turn onto Martin Luther King, Jr. St./Highway 3 S. Follow to Tutwiler, Mississippi, then turn left onto US-49 E S. Make a left onto Monroe St. upon reaching Sumner, Mississippi and follow to N. Court St., where the Emmett Till Interpretive Center will be on your left.

The drive takes approximately 4 hours one way.

From the West (Little Rock, Arkansas) on I-40

Traveling east on I-40 from Little Rock, Arkansas, take exit 202 for AR-33 towards Biscoe, Arkansas. In Biscoe, turn left onto US-70 E. Follow to AR-17 S and turn left onto State Highway 241. From there, follow US 49 S and continue on US 49E from Tutwiler, Mississippi to Sumner, Mississippi. Turn left onto Monroe St. in Sumner and follow to N. Court St., where the Emmett Till Interpretive Center will be on your left.

From the Emmett Till Interpretive Center in Sumner, Mississippi, to Graball Landing in Glendora, Mississippi

Traveling from the Emmett Till Interpretive Center in Sumner, Mississippi, head west on Monroe Street to US 49-E S. In Albin, Mississippi, turn left onto Albin-Mikoma Road, then immediately right onto Swan Lake Road. Travel five miles on Swan Lake Road and turn left onto Sharkey Road after crossing the railroad tracks. Cross the Little Tallahatchie River and turn right on River Road. Follow River Road approximately 2 ⅓ miles to a sign marking Graball Landing. Please note that River Road is unpaved and can be difficult to traverse in wet conditions.

Ask about road conditions at the Interpretive Center before visiting. The drive takes approximately 20-25 minutes one way.

Reaching the Illinois Unit

Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ is where the funeral for Emmett Till was held in early September 1955. The church is located on Chicago’s South Side and near I-90 and can be reached by car, train, or bus. Parking is available along the street. Find detailed directions below from areas of Chicago.

By Car

From the North (Downtown Chicago) on I-90

Traveling south from downtown Chicago, first take route 110 west about half a mile. Exit onto I-90 E heading south. Follow I-90 south for about 4 miles. Take exit 55B toward Pershing Rd. Merge onto S Wentworth Ave. and follow that south for about a half mile. Turn left on to W Root Street. After ¼ mile, turn left onto S State St. Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ is located on the right side of S State St. after ¼ mile.

The drive takes approximately 15 minutes one way, depending on traffic. 

From the South (Pullman National Historical Park) on I-94/90

Traveling north from Pullman National Historical Park, take E 111th St for ¾ mile. Merge onto I-94 W. Travel 10 miles north on I-94 (which becomes 1-90). Take exit 56A for 43rd St. After a ¼ mile, turn right on W Root St. After ¼ mile, turn left onto S State St. Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ is located on the right side of S State St. after ¼ mile.

The drive takes about 20 minutes one way, depending on traffic.

From the East (Indiana Dunes National Park) on I-94

Traveling from the Indiana Dunes National Park visitor center, travel south on highway 49 for one mile. Merge onto I-94 W and drive for 47 miles. Take exit 56A for 43rd St. After a ¼ mile, turn right on W Root St. After ¼ mile, turn left onto S State St. Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ is located on the right side of S State St. after ¼ mile.

The drive takes about 1 hour, depending on traffic.

By Train (Chicago Transit Authority)

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Green Line train services the area near Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ. It is about a ⅓-mile walk from Indiana Station via E 40th St to the Church. Visit the Chicago Transit Authority for route schedules, maps, and more information.

By Bus (Chicago Transit Authority)

CTA Bus Route #29 follows State St. and services the area. From the stop at State St. and 40th, it is about a 300-ft. walk to the Church. Visit the Chicago Transit Authority for route schedules, maps, and more information.
