The National Park Service cares for over 400 national park units and is a partner in nearly 50 National Heritage Areas.We also maintain the National Register of Historic Places, which is a constantly growing list of historic properties nominated by the American people as places they consider worthy of preservation.Within the National Register's approximately 90,000 listings are over 2,500 National Historic Landmarks.

Whew! That's a lot of places! Each of them tells a part of the American story.

If you're an educator, check out Teaching Cultural Heritage Preservation: Historic Preservation, Cultural Resource Stewardship, and Related Fields, a course outline developed by a team of educators and preservationists to encourage teaching about the preservation of diverse cultural heritage.

The
Local Preservation School is a free, online, and open educational resource for volunteers and preservation professionals. This is an open learning environment where you can learn how to save and sustain historic places in your communities. The Local Preservation School is a project of the National Park Service, the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers, and Baltimore Heritage. These resources are made for preservationists, by preservationists.
