Programs

We strive to develop and distribute skills and technologies that enhance the preservation, conservation, and interpretation of prehistoric and historic resources throughout the United States. Our work is organized into five program areas, each focused on a specific aspect of preservation:

  1. Archeology: This program area focuses on the research and preservation of archeological sites and artifacts. We work to understand the history and cultural significance of these resources and develop techniques for their long-term preservation.

  2. Architecture & Engineering: This program area focuses on the preservation and restoration of historic buildings and structures. We work with architects, engineers, and other professionals to develop techniques and technologies that ensure the longevity and integrity of these important cultural resources.

  3. Historic Landscapes: This program area focuses on the preservation and interpretation of historic landscapes, including gardens, parks, and other outdoor spaces. We work to understand the cultural and historical significance of these spaces and develop strategies for their preservation and interpretation.

  4. Materials Conservation: This program area focuses on the preservation and conservation of materials used in the construction and maintenance of historic buildings and structures. We work to develop techniques and technologies that allow us to preserve and restore these materials, ensuring the longevity of our cultural heritage.

  5. Technical Services Program: This program area provides technical preservation consulting and training to the National Parks Service (NPS) and other agencies in the cultural heritage sector. This work is meant to fill in existing gaps in knowledge ranging from the immediate needs of a particular structure or site, to testing and recommending products.

We are committed to conducting research and collaborating with partners on projects in these overlapping disciplinary areas, with the goal of advancing the field of preservation and making a positive impact on the cultural resources of our country.
