Types of Grants

The Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) was first funded in 1977 to assist governments and organizations to record, document, repair, and protect properties, landscapes, traditional cultural practices, and archeological sites. The fund also supports planning activities, education, training, and technical assistance activities. Over the past 40-plus years, grants have invested more than $1.2 billion in Federal funding for preservation projects in all 50 states, the territories, the Freely Associated States, the District of Columbia, and across more than 200 Tribes with signed THPO partnership agreements.

The State, Tribal, Local, Plans & Grants Division (STLPG) manages several grant programs to assist with a variety of historic preservation and community projects focused on heritage preservation. The funding for all grants, regardless of program, comes from the Historic Preservation Fund.

Other NPS Preservation Programs

  • Japanese American Confinement Sites Grants: A competitive matching grant program to fund the preservation and interpretation of U.S. confinement sites where Japanese Americans were detained during World War II.
  • Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) Grants: Grants for museums, Indian Tribes, and Native Hawaiian organizations to assist in consultation, documentation, and repatriation under NAGPRA.
  • American Battlefield Protection Program: The National Park Service’s American Battlefield Protection Program promotes the preservation of battlefields and sites of armed conflict on American soil. NPS ABPP administers four grant programs: Preservation Planning Grants, Battlefield Land Acquisition Grants, and the newly authorized Battlefield Restoration and Battlefield Interpretation grants. This financial assistance awarded to state, local, and tribal governments and to non-profit organizations supports community-driven stewardship of historic resources.
  • Technical Preservation Services: Coordinates with states and the Internal Revenue Service to certify federal tax credit projects as well as provide details on appropriate treatments for historic materials and guidance on the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines on Archeology and Historic Preservation.

Additional Support for the Freely Associated States & Territories

The Department of the Interior, Office of Insular Affairs provides additional funding and technical assistance to the territories of Guam, American Samoa, the US Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the Freely Associated States (the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of Palau, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands).
