Many fire-adapted natural ecosystems are rapidly disappearing due to development and historic fire suppression. Naturally occurring wildland fires and prescribed burns are critical in maintaining habitat for grassland birds such as bobolink and grasshopper sparrows, various insect species, and upland game bird species such as wild turkey. By using fire to restore resilient landscapes, NPS fire managers make future wildfires in these areas more manageable.
