The January 2025 Palisades Fire impacted nearly 20,000 acres within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. A Department of the Interior (DOI) Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Team deployed to the area to conduct rapid assessments to first identify values at risk and then prescribe emergency stabilization measures to protect those values.

The human-caused Geology fire started on June 10, 2023, along the Berdoo Canyon Road, one of Joshua Tree National Park’s designated backcountry routes. The Burned Area Recovery plan promotes recovery of native vegetation, establishing restoration islands within the burned area to promote re-establishment of native perennial vegetation, including Joshua trees.

Daniel Webster (1782-1852) was a lawyer and Whig party statesman who served as secretary of state for presidents John Tyler, William Henry Harrison, and Millard Fillmore. Previously he served as congressman first for New Hampshire, then congressman and senator for Massachusetts (1845-50). Webster's fame as an orator is captured in a stirring bas relief on the memorial's plinth.

The Role of Botany in Burned Area Emergency Response

After the 2023 Sourdough Fire at North Cascade National Park Service Complex a Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team was brought to the park complex. Wildfire has a big impact on vegetation since plants compose most of the fuel for fires. One of the team members was Janet Coles, a biologist. She surveyed the vegetation in the burned area focusing on invasive species, and trees damaged by fire that create hazards for humans or infrastructure.
Effects of Wildfire on Whitebark Pine

Whitebark pine is an important species in North Cascades National Park Service Complex ecosystems. The 2023 Sourdough Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team included a forester, fire ecologist, vegetation ecologist, and botanist with relevant knowledge and experience to survey the stands of whitebark pine and assess the impacts to this important tree from the 2023 Sourdough Fire.

The Department of Interior, Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Team was deployed during the post-fire recovery phase of the Sourdough Fire in North Cascades National Park to address hazards the fire created. The BAER Team evaluated and mitigated damage caused by the wildfire, and developed a long-term plan for repair and recovery which will stabilize soil, mitigate hazards to visitors, protect and repair trails and infrastructure, and protect important resources.

In FY23, there were 24 national parks throughout the country that received assistance for both Emergency stabilization as well as Burned Area Recovery funds for approximately 34 fire incidents. Both sources of funds are provided to stabilize and protect values-at-risk that are threatened by post-fire events such as flashfloods, debris flows, and erosion.

A memorial to the US Navy had always been part of Pierre L'Enfant's plan for Washingon, DC. However, it wasn't until 1987 that the US Navy Memorial was dedicated. The memorial design features a lone sailor in the midle of a granite sea surrounded by low, stone walls containing 26 bas-relief sculptures illustrating the history of the Navy and the sea services.

The Kalaupapa Fire ignited on January 9, 2020 and burned just over 20 acres in Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site (PUHE). NPS facilities were damaged by the fire, as were natural and cultural resources. The park has been the planting pili grass (Heteropogon contortus) to rehabilitate the cultural landscape within PUHE. In 2020, the focus of burned area emergency response/emergency stabilization (BAER/ES) work was to stabilize existing planting and in-situ nurseries.

The 2019 Woodbury fire impacted soil conditions creating unstable trails, increased flood hazard, and created greater risk of falling rocks or trees. In fall 2019, a trail crew from Saguaro National Park assisted Tonto National Monument mitigating trail damage that resulted from soil movement after the Woodbury Fire.
