Ash Scattering

Scattering cremated human remains (“cremains”) in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks should be a small private activity, held away from high visitor-use areas. A permit is not required, but all park regulations, including those below, must be followed in order to protect the park’s natural resources from potential damage or alteration:

• All cremains to be scattered must have been processed by pulverization after cremation.

• Scattering of cremains by persons on the ground must be performed at least 100 yards from any trail, road, developed facility, or body of water.

• Scattering cremains from the air must be performed at a minimum altitude of 2000 feet above ground level, and may not be performed over developed areas, facilities, or bodies of water.

• No markers or memorials are permitted.

• No publicity may be given to this activity.
