Contact: Mike Theune, 559-565-3703 KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Calif. April 25, 2016 – At the end of last week, fire management staff from Kings Canyon National Park held a fire extinguisher training for 15 employees of the of one the park’s concessioners, Delaware North, at the Grant Grove Fire Station. After the classroom portion of the training, employees got to use real fire extinguishers by putting out a small controlled fire, contained in a metal pan simulating a grease or oil fire. This gave the staff the experience of how to use and safely operate the fire extinguisher; so if they have to use one for real, it would not be the first time.
“It’s great to see our partner Delaware North participate in park sponsored fire training; this will strengthen our ability to ensure safe visitor and employee experiences, as well as enable us to better protect park assets,” said Randy Carroll, Concessions Management Specialist for Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, in 2014 (the most recent year with statistics) a fire department responded to a fire every 24 seconds. One structure fire was reported every 64 seconds. Having a charged and working fire extinguisher is a key element to protecting any home or business. Having an understanding of how they work is even better.
