British soldiers gather to eat under a canvas tent
Several British officers sit down to a meal in camp.  Like the American officers, they enjoyed many luxuries in camp, including better food, better and more table settings, and the use of good furniture.

THE BRITISH CAMP

This was the main British camp. Here, thousands of soldiers cooked, ate, slept, practiced marching and musket use, stood guard duty, cut wood, got water, and waited …and then waited some more.

The commanding officers kept the men busy with hours upon hours of practice and other camp work. They also spent many hours planning what to do.

A group of British soldiers and camp followers crowds under a canvas tarp as they sit down to a meal in camp.  Soldiers and camp followers (often wives and children) enjoyed few amenities.
