San Juan Island has been shaped by many people from many backgrounds. Coast Salish people have made this island their home since time immemorial. Hawaiian shepherds employed by the Hudson's Bay Company first colonized this island in 1853. During The Pig War, members of the British and American militaries and civillians swelled the island's population. When the island became part of the United States, homesteaders claimed acreage for family farms and industries such as salmon processing and lime production took hold.
