Today, Thursday, September 14, at approximately noon a park ranger in the Alpine Visitor Center was notified by a visitor of a vehicle fire one quarter mile west of the Forest Canyon Overlook on Trail Ridge Road. The ranger responded to the scene within ten minutes. He found a 1990 jeep wrangler completely engulfed in flames. The jeep had been pulling a utility trailer. The utility trailer had also caught on fire as well as a small section of tundra along Trail Ridge Road. A passerby was unable to use his cellular phone to call for help so he picked up the driver and passenger and drove them to Estes Park Medical Center. The driver of the jeep is a 65 year old male from Berthoud, Colorado. His 61 year old wife was the passenger. The driver received serious burns, the passenger received minor burns. The driver was flown from the Estes Park Medical Center to the burn unit at North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley. The Estes Park Volunteer Fire Department extinguished the flames of the vehicle and trailer. The cause of the fire is being investigated. There were numerous witnesses in the area. No further information will be released at this time. |
