The Orionid meteor shower is active from mid-October, peaking on October 20 and 21. Orion takes up residence in the southern West Marin skies, just overhead in the morning darkness.

Black-tailed deer linger around the picnic area, stocking up on the bounty of acorns. It is amazing to watch them in "deer yoga," bending under the horse corral fences.

The duck hunting season on the Tomales Bay Ecological Reserve brings unexpected popping sounds to the area from duck hunters, often in the mornings. The hunting season begins this weekend and ends in January.

Park staff is planning some controlled burns this week in the Drakes Estero area to eliminate exotic broom plants. Updates will be posted on local media and social media!

Road paving projects are scheduled for Bear Valley Road on Thursday and Friday, October 22 and 23. Plan to use Highway 1 and Sir Francis Drake Boulevard to bypass the area. It will bring delays in accessing Limantour Road.

Special bat talks are slated for 1:30 pm at the Bear Valley Visitor Center on October 24, 25, and 31 to honor Bat Week. Bats roost in some of the park barns and other structures, as well in as hollow trees.
