In 2017, male condor 589 and female 569 (who is managed by Ventana Wildlife Society) nested in a remote cliff within the park. The condor crew was able to place a camera inside the nest to document their chick, condor 878. This gave us exciting, rare footage of the early stages of condor development. The same pair used that nest again in 2019, raising condor 996. Here you can see some saved video clips from both nesting seasons. The video camera has given us invaluable monitoring information, and let us capture some behaviors that had never been documented in wild condors before.

  Condor chick 878 gets some exercise at about four months old. Like human children, condor chicks get large bursts of energy throughout the day. This energy gets channeled into the jumping and flapping that you see here. All this play helps strengthen the muscles they'll need to succeed as adults.
