September 29, 1780. The Patriot forces had split and were descending the mountains in two groups. Although this made them weaker if one was attacked, it allowed them to use both possible routes and ensure the enemy was not sneaking past them. This northern trail was used by the men of Sevier, Shelby, and McDowell, while Campbell's Virginians used the more southern trail. The Patriots continued descending this trail to their next campsite at North Cove. This trail is located along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and can be accessed at the Hefner Gap Overlook parking area. The trailhead is across the road from the parking area, so always use caution when crossing the road. The trail is 1.5 miles of natural surface. There are no facilities at this parking area or along this trail. |
