The Cultural Significance and Stories of Oregon Caves

Although the cave was not officially discovered until 1874, there is reason to believe that the Takelma tribe, who lived in the region for thousands of years, may have known of its existence. Their deep connection to the land suggests that they were aware of many natural features, including the cave.

The cultural stories we share about Oregon Caves primarily begin after Elijah Davidson stumbled upon the cave in 1874. These narratives focus on Davidson's discovery and the many explorers and visitors who followed in his footsteps.
