The People Behind the Preservation of Oregon CavesOver the years, a variety of individuals have played key roles in the preservation, development, and eventual restoration of Oregon Caves. After Elijah Davidson's first documented entry into the caves in 1874, word spread, and more people began to explore the fascinating underground world. Soon after, the caves were developed for tours, drawing visitors from far and wide. Protect and PreserveOne of the most significant influences on the caves’ preservation came from Joaquin Miller, known as the "Poet of the Sierras." After visiting the caves in 1907, Miller wrote an article sharing his experience, which brought nationwide attention to the site. His writings, combined with the efforts of C.B. Watson and other influential advocates, helped secure the caves' protection. Their efforts led to President William Howard Taft declaring Oregon Caves a National Monument in 1909, ensuring the site's preservation for future generations. |
