Safety

A safe visit starts with being prepared for changing conditions and the unexpected. Whether you are hiking, swimming, paddling, or exploring the river corridor, knowing the terrain, carrying the right supplies, and planning ahead can help prevent emergencies and keep your trip enjoyable.

Plan Ahead and Stay Safe

  • Leave trip plans and the park’s contact information with someone who can call if you miss your expected return date/time.
  • Be prepared by bringing water, food, a first aid kit, sturdy shoes, compass, GPS unit and protection from the sun.
  • Cell phone coverage may be spotty. Do not rely on their use alone in the case of an emergency.
  • Keep your vehicle locked and keep valuables out of sight.
  • Do not drink stream water without boiling or treating it first.
  • Be aware of poison ivy. Leaves of three, leave them be.
  • Watch footing around bluffs and cliffs. Rocks along trails can be slippery.
  • Never swim alone. Be aware of quickly changing river levels and currents; diving is not recommended in these rocky, shallow waters.

In the event of an emergency, please call 911.
