Historic Hamlet Hike
2 to 3-mile easy to moderate off trail hike.
Walk near the New River to explore the old logging town site of Hamlet, once a booming town of the New River Gorge. See evidence of this once-thriving industrial town. Also hear about the area’s earlier pioneer history, the life of Mary Draper Ingles. See one of the largest sycamore trees around. Wear pants and sturdy hiking shoes; bring water and a snack.

Full Moon Hike
2.5- mile walk.
Join the park naturalist for a walk under the Harvest Moon. The moon will appear orange as it rises above the golf course. In North America, this moon is name so when it is the moon closest to the Autumn equinox and time to harvest crops. This walk will follow a paved golf cart path. Brind a flashlight and dress appropriately for the weather.

Learn to weave a beginner-friendly Appalachian egg basket using the vines of pervasive plants such as kudzu and grape. Be prepared for a short walk into a vine patch. Adaptive Programming Learning and Exploration with Active Southern WV and New River Gorge NP&P
Get active in this community building project on National Public Lands Day where Active SWV will host a learning session about adaptive and beginner friendly activities; how to lead them, equipment modifications, and a listening session from participants. Learn leadership skills together for diverse groups of beginners with disabilities, especially if you are or can represent those individuals. Presentations will include sessions on trails are adapted and improved for accessibility. There will also be hands on demonstrations with equipment for a variety of types of outdoor activities. Take a hike through the lens of limited mobility. This is a great way to celebrate National Public Lands Day. Painting Tiny Worlds in Watercolor with Rosalie Haizlett
In this beginner-friendly workshop, we’ll go over the complete nature watercolor process, from pencil sketch to final painting. Weather permitting, we’ll start the class with a 15-minute walk to see what small, interesting natural subjects we can use for inspiration (moss, lichen, moths, butterflies, seed pods, etc.). Then we’ll use a combination of living objects and reference photos to bring these often-overlooked aspects of the natural world to life on the page. Book Talk and Signing with Illustrator-Author Rosalie Haizlett
Join West Virginia nature illustrator and author Rosalie Haizlett for a talk about her newly published book, Tiny Worlds of the Appalachian Mountains: An Artist’s Journey. This book chronicles Haizlett’s 6-month road-trip up the entire Appalachian Mountain ranger, from Alabama to Canada, as she hiked slowly and documented the tiny, often -ovrelooked plants, animals, and mushrooms that she encountered. Haizlett will share a behind-the-scenes look at her adventures and artwork during this talk, followed by a book signing. This new book will be available for purchase through the park store.

1.0 mile hike.
Take a walk with the park naturalist along the road and into the woods. We will look for evidence of Pipestem’s pre-park history. Pictures and stories will be shared while we enjoy the beauty of the fall foliage. Also learn about plants seen along the way and how they tie into history. A little extra walk leads to a cemetery where some folks heard about on this activity are buried. Participants of the WonderFall Hike will receive a special patch.

Full Supermoon Hike
2.5- mile walk.
Join the park naturalist for a walk under the Harvest Moon. The full supermoon will be the biggest and brightest in 2024, as the moon will approach the Earth the closest this year Also, this moon may appear red and orange with its hanging low above the horizon. In North America, this moon is named for the time to hunt and slaughter meat. This walk will follow a paved golf cart path. Brind a flashlight and dress appropriately for the weather.

Sounds of Appalachia 2024: Saturday September 28, 2024

Returning for the third year, New River Gorge National Park and Preserve presents Sounds of Appalachia as part of Hidden History Happenings. This celebration of Appalachia traditional music features performances by local musicians and demonstrations by park rangers.

This year's performances will be at the Grandview Ampitheater in the Grandview area of the park.
