Truman's Missouri National Guard unit was called up in August 1917. He quickly rose through the ranks to captain and took command of Battery D, 129th Field Artillery in July, 1918. After a rough start, "Captain Harry" earned his men's esteem. They admired his fairness and bravery in France. Truman enjoyed military challenges but longed for home and Bess. His World War I experience and successful political career produced a conscientious and trustworthy leader. His great respect for soldiers influenced his decision to integrate the US military in 1948, in spite of overwhelming opposition. |
