Accessibility

Physical/Mobility

The Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site Visitor Center, the courtyard and the first floor of Mrs. Walker's historic home are all wheelchair accessible. While Mrs. Walker added an elevator to her home to assist herself, it is a historic elevator and is not able to be used to reach her second floor. A photobook located at the visitor center front desk can be requested which shows all of the rooms in her house, including the second floor since it is not accessible.

Deaf/Hearing Loss

The 20-minute movie, "Carry On: The Life and Legacy of Maggie Lena Walker" has captioned enabled when played at the visitor center. The movie also has open-captions when played on the Maggie L. Walker NHS Youtube channel.

Service Animals

Service animals are allowed in both the Maggie L. Walker NHS Visitor Center and also in the Historic Home. For guidance about the definition of a service animals, please read the U.S. Department of Justice's website.
