Explore waysides in Los Alamos. Los Alamos was the site of atomic bomb research and development during the Manhattan Project. Under the direction of J. Robert Oppenheimer, hundreds of workers in Los Alamos gathered in secret to assemble the Gadget, the world's first nuclear test device, Little Boy, the atomic bomb fueled with enriched uranium from Oak Ridge and dropped on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945, and Fat Man, the atomic bomb fueled with plutonium from Hanford and dropped on Nagasaki, Japan on August 9, 1945.
