Archeology

Archeology has long been one of the tools used to better understand the Civil War battles fought at Manassas National Battlefield Park. But it also has much to reveal about those who lived on or owned the land before and after the Civil War, including the free and enslaved African American communities of the area, and the Native Americans who lived there long before European settlement. It is important to note that unauthorized metal detection, digging, and possessing a metal detector within Manassas National Battlefield Park is against the law. This applies to all national parks and federal property. If you find an archeological item/artifact, leave it in place and let a park employee know. Disturbing or collecting these items on federal land is in violation of the Archaeological Resources Protection Act.
