Archives for Black Women's History

 

When Mary McLeod Bethune founded the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (NCNW) in 1935, one of their objectives was "the dissemination of information for, by and about Negro women." Inspired by Mary Beard, founder of the World Center for Women's Archives and her friend and colleague, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, Mrs. Bethune and the NCNW formed an Archives Committee and began the process of collecting and preserving African American women's history. The National Park Service continues to preserve this invaluable archive.

Today, the National Archives for Black Women's History remains the only such archive solely dedicated to African American women.
