Lanai, Niihau, and the Northwestern Islands

There are no National Park Service units on Lanai, Ni'ihau, Kahoolawe, or the other northwestern Hawaiian Islands. However, through NPS science and research and cultural preservation activities, we still have stories to share. Explore these stories below.

    Kaunolu Village Site is located on the Island of Lanai. This ancient fishing community, occupied since at least the 1400s, consisted of a wide variety of religious structures, residences of priests, and isolated petroglyphs.

    Heiau on Mokumanamana.

    Nihoa and Mokumanumanu (Necker) Islands contain heiau (temples), living sites, and agricultural terraces. Recent studies that unite archeological analyses with oral histories have uncovered the roles these islands played within Hawaiian rituals of the past.
