Important to know before you make plans:

Park staff are working closely with the Hawaii State Department of Health staff to welcome a limited number of visitors to the park again. Currently, there is no active permitted tour operator, and no tours are available at this time. Please continue to check this website for updates.

Access to the park will be denied to anyone that has not made prior arrangements and obtained necessary authorization as per Hawai`i State Law.

The Kalaupapa Overlook on 'topside' Molokai at Palaʻau State Park offers views of the peninsula and wayside interpretive exhibits for visitor learning.

The National Park Service does not offer any scheduled interpretive programs, activities, or provide visitor services because of the restricted nature of visitation to the park. There is no interpretive center at Kalaupapa.

A bookstore is located in the Kalaupapa Settlement at the American of Japanese Ancestry (AJA) Buddhist Hall and is run by the park's cooperating association, Pacific Historic Parks (PHP).

WARNING: Kalaupapa is an extremely isolated community

Furthermore, once you are down in Kalaupapa, there are no medical services. Be prepared that in inclement weather or potential other challenges, it is possible that getting out of Kalaupapa will not be feasible. Due to this, it is suggested that upon a visit to Kalaupapa, you should bring any needed medications and even some extra food. The 3.5 mile trail to the park is extremely steep and challenging with uneven surfaces. Hiking the trail is physically demanding and careful consideration should be given to your physical fitness level before beginning the hike.
