Parlor

family of five men and three woman posing for a painting

Winter Evening at Lawnfield by De Scott Evans

This painting, although commissioned after the President’s death and completed in 1882, gives onlookers a wonderful picture of the Garfield family in the parlor of their Mentor home. Shown from left to right are: James R. Garfield, Mollie Garfield, James A. Garfield, Lucretia Garfield, Eliza Ballou Garfield (the President’s mother), Abram Garfield, Harry Garfield, and Irvin Garfield. Although Harry and James were away at school, they were certainly in the thoughts and minds of the other family members during the 1880 campaign.

Reporters referred to Garfield's Mentor property as "Lawnfield" during the campaign; the family preferred to call it their "Mentor Farm".
