Classes can participate in FREE hands-on, curriculum-based programs to learn about Ohio history. There are several options available:
James A. Garfield National Historic Site, Mentor – 2 hours
Where was Garfield? Timeline Program – students use investigation skills in our museum exhibits to find facts about Ohio’s history, and use those facts to create a giant timeline. Classes will also take a tour of the Garfield home, where we will compare and contrast what life was like for the Garfield children in the 1880s and students today.
Garfield: Man of Many Hats – students use investigation skills to find information in our museum exhibits about James A. Garfield and the many jobs he held. From canal boy to president, students will learn how Garfield’s natural curiosity and love of reading and education moved him out of poverty and eventually into the White House! A compare/contrast tour of the Garfield home is also included, as described above.
Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland - 2 hours
Lake View is the permanent resting place of many important Northeast Ohioans. Staff will take students into the Garfield Memorial where the President and Mrs. Garfield are laid to rest, and tour them through the rest of the Cemetery while pointing out memorials and gravestones to inventors, philanthropists, politicians, and others of note.
You may choose to visit one or both sites in a single day. Please allow about 5 ½ hours for the combined Mentor and Cleveland trip. There is no charge for programming, and busing reimbursement is available for Title 1 schools through the National Park Foundation’s Every Kid Outdoors grant.
Each program has a pre-visit component on Ohio's 8 national parks. This can be done virtually or in-class.
