President James A. Garfield and his wife Lucretia had seven children; five would live into adulthood. Their first daughter Eliza Arabella, known to the family as "Little Trot," died when she was three and one-half years old. Harry, the oldest son, would become a member of the U.S. Fuel Administration for President Woodrow Wilson during World War I. James R., would become a trustee of both the Western Reserve Historical Society and Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland that would become a large part of the story told at James A. Garfield National Historic Site. Mollie, was the middle child of the Garfields and she would become a mother and housewife. She married her deceased father's private secretary, Joseph Stanley-Brown. Irvin McDowell attended Harvard Law School and apprenticed for his two older brothers at their Cleveland, Ohio firm, Garfield and Garfield. Abram would become a premier Cleveland, Ohio architect. The youngest child of the President and Mrs. Garfield was named Edward, known as "Neddie." Like his sister Eliza, he unfortunately died very young. |
