Isle Royale ReflectionLooking back, my time on Isle Royale felt like a beautifully illustrated children's book with a small cast of characters. My parents, fellow teen artist Gail Bolli, mentors Bonnie and Keith, Ranger Chris, and of course the equally important non-human characters like Loon, Moose, Eagle, Squirrel and Fox. There were adventures, antics and morals to every story, all written across the watercolor setting of lake, trees and rock. Those 9 days on the island feel like months in my mind and I read my story of them over and over still, at least a little, nearly every day. It was a place where increased independence was necessary. Trekking back and forth between the housekeeping cottages and the Dassler Cabin without adults and sitting on the Tobin Harbor seaplane docks at dusk brought on the emotional space that lies between serene reflection and anxious alertness. Those feelings, the delayed self-assurance they eventually inspired, and the gentle attentiveness of our artist mentors shaped the experience into a coming-of-age period I’m so grateful for. - Adelaide Lyons, 2019 "Lunar Song"About the ArtistAdelaide Lyons was a Teen-Artist-in-Residence from July 16th to July 24th, 2019.
