(A Song of Isle Royale)

There is a

deep
deep

heart of dark stone
hidden in the lake,
wild waves breaking on its hard core,
unnoticeable,
except it juts out in forested miles of island rocks,
far in the great expanse of water.
An isle

of heartstone,
of deep stone,
of king’s stone,
of hard rock that we call

beautiful.

About the Artist

Elizabeth Bergstrom was a Teen Artist-in-Residence at Isle Royale National Park in 2022. She loves calling the Upper Peninsula home, hearing its history and stories, and making poetry out of the lessons taught by nature. Elizabeth is also an accomplished violinist, her music serving as another medium for her artistic talent to be conveyed.
