River Crew
Volunteers working in the river

The Park Connection has partnered with the Northwest Indiana Paddling Association (NWIPA) with our River Restoration Crew and River Scouts programs. NWIPA is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing the region's paddling resources and opportunities, providing environmental stewardship of the region's waterways, education, and connecting paddlers from around the region.

The east branch of the Little Calumet River flows 16 miles from the Park's Heron Rookery, winding through Mnoke Prairie out to Lake Michigan by Portage Lakefront. This scenic stretch of river passes through some of the most biodiverse habitats in the region. Through this partnership with NWIPA, we aim to make this river a showcase for recreational use in the park and the region. Work will focus on log jam removal, trash cleanup, or other work to make the river more accessible to the public.
