Tuzigoot National Monument, in central Arizona, was established by presidential proclamation to preserve one of the largest known pueblos of Sinaguan origin. The pueblos, built during AD 1100–1450, serve as a benchmark of the Tuzigoot Phase of the archeological record.
Though it is part of the Sonoran Desert Network, Tuzigoot lies in a region called the Apache Highlands, characterized by mountain "sky islands" separated by grassland and desert scrub "seas."
Issues of concern relative to natural resources include adjacent land use, development, and water use and the introduction and spread of non-native species. All of the significant surface water bodies in or near Tuzigoot National Monument (e.g., Tavasci Marsh, the Verde River, and Peck's Lake) are listed as impaired or have a recent history of impairment.
With an elevation range of approximately 3,360–3,400 feet (1,024–1,036 m), Tuzigoot National Monument is part of the thornscrub biome. Average annual precipitation is 13.5 inches (344 mm). The park is part of the Apache Highlands ecoregion.
The Sonoran Desert Network monitors air quality, climate, invasive exotic plants, landbirds, springs, seeps, and tinajas, and streams at Tuzigoot National Monument. The results of this work can be found in a variety of publications and other information. The network also maintains species lists for the park.

Sonoran Desert Network scientists monitor climate and water at Tuzigoot National Monument by taking measurements throughout the year. This report summarizes climate and springs data from Water Year 2022. Monitoring these key natural resources at the park helps us detect changes over time. The data indicate the park had a relatively dry year, though the spring was wet for all 173 days monitored. Maximum temperatures were warmer than previous averages.

The American bullfrog is a great threat to aquatic ecosystems in the Southwest. They are voracious predators of aquatic animals and carry diseases that kill native species. We will implement three main actions in this project funded by the Inflation Reduction Act, Invasive Species Grant: bullfrog control, native species recovery and reintroduction, and development of early detection/rapid response protocols for bullfrogs.

At nine southwestern parks, Sonoran Desert Network staff are performing environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling. By analyzing the genomes present in a water sample, eDNA sampling allows us to learn which species use a given area without the use of capture, hair snares, or cameras. The results of this inventory will help NPS staff to prioritize springs for monitoring and conservation.

When the climate changes enough, the vegetation communities growing in any given place will also change. Under an expanded bimodal climate zone, some plant communities in western national parks are more likely to change than others. National Park Service ecologists and partners investigated the future conditions that may force some of this change. Having this information can help park managers decide whether to resist, direct, or accept the change.
