Tualatin, OR: Tualatin has an Ice Age story, and a new nonprofit is helping to shed light on that history. Tualatin Library expands opportunities for visitors to learn about the Missoula Floods and Ice Age Floods National Geologic Trail.
Ice Age Floods rafted a two-ton igneous rock not normally found in Oregon's Willamette Valley to Tualatin. It was discovered during excavation for the new Lakeridge Junior High School. The Rhyolite is mottled yellow, brown and greenish rock which likely came from the mountains of British Columbia, Canada or Montana.
For the first time in it's short history Ice Age Floods National Geologic Trail now has its first full time permanent Program Manager. Created by Congress in 2009 the Floods Trail highlights the unique features on the landscape resulting from floods which occurred at the end of the last Ice Age. The National Park Service oversee the Ice Age Floods National Geologic Trail and works with regional partners to encourage education and understanding of the cataclysmic geologic events.
