Non-Profit Partners

Non-profit partners are authorized by law and exist to support environmental, educational and scientific programs and provide funding to aid these programs as an extension of the NPS mission. These include:

 

Hawaiʻi Pacific Parks Association (HPPA ) is a nonprofit cooperating association working in partnership with the National Park Service in Hawaiʻi and American Samoa. HPPA operates the park stores inside the Kīlauea Visitor Center and Kahuku Contact Station. Proceeds from park stores support interpretation, educational programs, research projects, publications, and cultural activities. The core purpose of HPPA is to inspire visitors and to foster meaningful connections to the parks—for the preservation and enjoyment of the parks forever—all with a spirit of aloha.

 

Friends of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and park philanthropic partner that strives to connect people with the park through education, volunteerism, and philanthropy. The organization operates the Hawai'i Volcanoes Institute, providing field seminars and private learning experiences.

 

The Fund for People in Parks provides private funding and professional services to complete inspirational projects that enhance the visitor experience in western National Parks.

 

Business Partners

Other business partners operate under various legal authorities appropriate to the park. These include:

 

The Hawai’i Volcanoes Lodging Company, LLC is the authorized concessioner operating the historic Volcano House hotel and Nāmakanipaio Campground inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

 

The Volcano Art Center (VAC) is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) educational organization founded in 1974 by a band of eclectic and energetic artists. Today VAC operates the Volcano Art Center Gallery located in the historic 1877 Volcano House Hotel building in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park under a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service.

 

Since 1916, Kilauea Military Camp (KMC) has served as a recreation facility for military members and their families within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Today, KMC operates as a U.S. Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) facility under a Special Use Permit with the park.

 

State and Federal Partners

 

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory monitors earthquakes and the active volcanoes in Hawaiʻi, assesses their hazards, issues warnings, and advances scientific understanding to reduce the impacts of volcanic eruptions. Research at the USGS Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center focuses on providing the scientific understanding and technologies needed to support and implement sound management and conservation of our nation's biological resources occurring in Hawai'i and other Pacific island locations.

 

Hawaii County is one of the six counties in the U.S. state of Hawaiʻi. Hawaiʻi County serves as the local government for the entire Island of Hawaiʻi, often called the "Big Island" to distinguish it from the state as a whole. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park works closely with Hawaiʻi County especially with emergency management issues.
