Oral History Interview with Carl "Soot" Bredhoff in 2022. Interview was conducted by Alana Kanahele. This project was a collaboration between the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa's Center for Oral History and the National Park Service. Full Transcript Carl “Soot” Bredhoff was born in Honolulu in 1934 and raised in Mānoa Valley. He attended MidPacific Institute before pursuing his degree in animal science at Colorado State University. Upon returning to the islands, he worked at Kualoa Ranch. “Soot” is proudest of his contributions to Kaupō and Kahuku Ranches, where he helped improved bloodlines, horse herds, housing, and worker relations. From 1967 to 1982, Soot was the Kaupo Ranch manager—and Huialoha’s Church de facto moderator. In 1978, Soot teamed up with his longtime friend Carl “Linky” Lindquist to launch a campaign to restore Huialoha Church. The funds allowed for the rebuilding of the church’s roof, steeple, ceiling, windows, and bell tower. Judith Bredhoff, Sootʻs wife, served as Treasurer of Huialoha church in Kaupō for over 40 years. Soot was also inducted into the Paniolo Hall of Fame in 2002. |
