Kuwohi (formerly Clingmans Dome) & Newfound Gap straddle the pinnacle of the Smokies where an important high-elevation pass connects the North Carolina and Tennessee sides of the park via Newfound Gap Road/US 411. The Appalachian Trail and other trails wind through spruce-fir forest, and at the very top, via Kuwohi Road (formerly Clingmans Dome Road), is a small visitor center and popular lookout tower providing panoramic views.
