NPS Internships are a fantastic way for college students, recent graduates, and people in the early career stage to get their start in the National Park Service and develop the variety of skills necessary for holistic natural resource management. Below are the main internship programs that we hire from at Great Basin National Park. A majority of our internship positions occur in the summer and fall, but we occasionally offer positions in the off season. Follow the links to learn more about program details and requirements. 
NPS / W. Hutton Scientists in ParksThe Scientists in Parks (SIP) AmeriCorps program places hundreds of aspiring professionals throughout the National Park System to work on natural resource management needs. SIP offers positions across all natural science fields, as well as positions in education, interpretation, and science communication. The SIP program is committed to providing all aspiring professionals—especially those historically underrepresented in the sciences—with a unique opportunity to work on real-world projects while building professional experience and a life-long connection to America’s national parks. Great Basin typically hires two Astronomy Assistants each summer through SIP. Our Astronomy Assistants join the Great Basin astronomy team for 12 weeks each, providing astronomy programs, conducting research on dark sky preservation, and learning about being a park ranger all under one of the darkest night skies in the contiguous 48 states. An astronomy or physics degree isn’t required, but a demonstrated interest in the night sky and science outreach is encouraged! For example, in winter 2023-24 there was a Cave/Karst Assistant position. These positions are not offered regularly, however, and you will need to keep an eye on the SIP listings for additional opportunities. Summer SIP applications open in early December and close mid-January, with position start dates varying between May and September. NPS Intergovernmental Internship CooperativeThe Intergovernmental Internship cooperative (IIC) is a partnership between Southern Utah University and various land management agencies with the goal of providing interns real world work experiences that complement their academic and career pursuits. Through these experiences, interns develop a working knowledge about natural and cultural resources and a variety of careers in public lands management, outdoor recreation, and hospitality. The IIC leverages their network of partners to support local economies and under-served communities, share knowledge regionally, and open doors for youth development. IIC interns at Great Basin National Park perform duties in interpretation, visitor outreach, and park maintenance to gain a broad understanding of land management. In previous years this has included developing tours of Lehman Caves, taking part in trail maintenance, and researching habitat restoration projects! Interns work closely alongside park rangers to learn about the ins and outs of the National Park Service. Applicants are not required to be Southern Utah University students or alumni. We encourage prospective interns from any major and background who have an interest in land and resource management to apply! Applications typically open in February for the upcoming summer season. The position duration and start date are flexible. Interns begin between April and June and the position lasts from 3-6 months.
