Native Americans have used the waters of Popes Creek and the fertile terrain that surrounds it for thousands of years. European immigrants later arrived, bringing with them first indentured servants, and then enslaved Africans. Together these groups struggled to define their place in the greater Atlantic World. Beginning in the 19th century, individuals have endeavored to memorialize this land as the birthplace of George Washington.
