Long before the Europeans arrived, Native Americans used the waters of Popes Creek and the Potomac River and the green and gentle landscapes that surrounded them. The European immigrants later arrived, bringing with them first, indentured servants and then enslaved Africans. Together these groups struggled to define their place in the greater Atlantic World.
