Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) The black cherry belongs to the rose family which includes vines, shrubs, and trees, usually with leaves that are arranged alternately along the stem. This native plant usually grows relatively fast from 25 ft. to 110 ft. tall. Its leaves are typically 2 in. to 5 in. long, ovate-lanceolate in shape, with finely toothed margins. In the fall, the leaves turn yellowish and reddish. This widespread species is the largest and most valuable native cherry in North America. The fruit is consumed by a variety of birds and mammals. |
