American woodcocks can be found throughout Gateway in the spring and summer. Woodcocks have a round body, short legs, and a long bill.
Nest in young forests, old fields, and mixed forest-urban areas throughout the eastern U.S. and southern Canada.
The tip of the woodcock bill is flexible, which allows them to pull insect larva and worms from the dirt. Males do not help with the nesting. Nests are mainly on open ground.
Still numerous, but in a slow decline.
