Plan ahead and be prepared! Always be aware of current weather conditions. Be prepared to seek safe shelter if thunder and lightning are present. Sheltering in batteries, magazines, tunnels, and overhangs within the forts when lightning and thunder are present is not advised. These cave-like structures do not protect you in case of a lightning strike. According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the safest location during lightning activity is a large enclosed building. The second safest location is an enclosed metal vehicle, but not a topless or soft top vehicle. During inclement weather, National Park Service staff and volunteers will make decisions about visitor safety based on current conditions and guided by standard operating procedures. When visiting park sites, we ask that visitors be aware of their surroundings and follow directions given by uniformed personnel in preparation for, and during stormy conditions. We will inform visitors when there is a possibility that storms may impact the length of time people can spend at Fort Sumter.
